What is Happening in Your Child's Music Class?
|
ROYAL CHARACTER:
Our theme in music class in the elementary school is ROYAL CHARACTER. We are not only learning to read, sing and play music, we are also learning songs that teach us how to be respectful and responsible.
Kindergarten –
The kindergarten students will learn to move to the steady beat, sing with a singing voice, and play rhythm instruments. Later on in the school year, they will begin to read notes on the staff and simple rhythms. They will start to play simple melodies on the glockenspiels. These skills are taught through songs, games, and dances. The students will also learn about a composer.
1st Grade –
The students will practice singing with a singing voice and following a conductor. They will learn to read simple melodies on the staff, practice moving and playing to the steady beat, read and play simple rhythms, and play rhythm instruments and the glockenspiels. These skills are taught through songs, games, and dances. The students will also learn about a composer.
2nd Grade –
The students will practice singing with a singing voice, following the conductor, and reading simple melodies and rhythms. They will start playing recorders and learning to read sheet music. The students will also learn about composers. These skills are taught through songs, games, and a few dances.
3rd Grade –
The students will continue to learn to play the recorder and read sheet music. They will learn to play duets and read slightly more difficult melodies. They will also learn to sing with two-part harmony. These skills are taught mainly through songs and games. Practice is the key to developing these musical skills. The students will learn a couple dances, learn about composers, and focus on music from other cultures.
4th Grade –
The students will learn to read more difficult rhythms with sixteenth notes, play melodies on the glockenspiels, create instruments, and compose their own melodies. They will practice singing two-part harmonies and playing in ensemble. Practice is the key to developing these musical skills. They will also learn about composers and focus on patriotic songs. These skills are taught mainly through songs and games.
5th Grade –
The students will practice reading rhythms with sixteenth notes and learn to count rhythms with dotted notes. They will practice playing in ensemble using a variety of instruments. They will also practice singing in two and three part harmony. They will create instruments and compose their own melodies. These skills are taught mainly through songs and games. Practice is the key to developing these musical skills. They will learn about composers as well.

Middle/High School Music
|
Guitar
The students will learn to play chords, use various styles of strumming, play power chords, play the blues, read tablature, play by finger picking, and read basic musical notation. They will also learn to play scales, read key signatures, and sound out songs on their guitars. The students will hopefully perform in the winter and spring concerts.
Middle School General Music
The students will learn to play simple rhythms and melodies. They will practice playing in ensemble with other students. The students will also learn about the lives of composers, the history of music, and various styles of music. They will learn about the science of sound and how instruments create specific sounds.
Middle School Choir
The students will learn various styles of songs and sing in ensemble with other students. As they sing fun and enjoyable songs, the students will learn to sing in three-part harmony, develop their singing voice, and practice healthy techniques for singing. The students will also learn to read rhythms, read syllables (do, re, mi, etc.), and follow the conductor. They will be tested via videotape (for the teacher’s eyes only), audiotape, and by short journal entries at the end of class. Cooperation and participation are the keys to success. Everyone’s participation is very important.
High School Choir
The students will learn various styles of songs, singing in three- to five-part harmony. As they sing fun and enjoyable songs, they will develop their singing voice, learning proper techniques and exercises for singing. They will also learn to read rhythms, read syllables (do, re, mi, etc.) and follow the conductor. They will be tested via videotape (for the teacher’s eyes only), audiotape, and by short journal entries at the end of class. Cooperation and participation are the keys to success.
811 Music Class
In this class, the students are enhancing their large and fine locomotor skills through exercises, dances, and playing the recorder and other instruments. The students are also learning to read music and to play music on the recorders. In addition, they improve their diction through songs and learn to focus for extended periods of time on an activity. .

Music Class Rules:
1. Show respect for others and their property.
2. Show responsibility by following directions the first time they are given.
Elementary School Procedures:
1. Warning
2. Sit apart from the class for 5 minutes.
3. Sit apart from the class for 10 minutes AND lose one apple.
4. Sit outside the classroom door and must earn their way back into the classroom through good behavior AND lose another apple.
5. Sent to the office with a conduct referral AND lose another apple.
- Students who lose all of their apples, unfortunately, cannot participate in the reward day.
