GRADE FIVE

   Fifth grade will be a busy year. It is the last year at D.H. Robbins Elementary School.  Students will be expected to gain more independence during this school year.  Students will participate in the Montgomery County D.A.R.E. Program. The fifth grade students will also be in charge of running the School Store.  The last few years we have been taking an annual and rewarding field trip to Niagara Falls.  At the end of the year, a graduation ceremony will conclude the year. Throughout the year, P.A.R.P., assemblies, field day and other exciting events will be available.

   This page is still under construction.  It can be used as a guide to view news from the fifth grade classes.

 

 

Agendas

Daily use to record assignments is very Important for organizational skills and communication between home and school. Please check your child's agenda and homework each night. Parents can initial at the bottom. Comments are welcomed!

Each student is given a purple and white D.H. Robbins homework folder(supplied by PTO) for bringing items to and from school, which should also be checked each night.

 

Math-This year fifth grade students will be using the four computational processes(addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) in multi-step problems.  We will study graphs, fractions, decimals, geometry, ratios and percent, and probability.  Homework will be given Monday- Thursday nights.  Quizzes will be twice a week.

Language Arts-  A combination of phonics and comprehension strategies will be used to improve reading.  We will supplement with novels and other activities.  Our focus is to read all types of genre (historical and realistic fiction, non-fiction, magazine articles, poetry, etc.) in hopes of understanding different literature.  Reading, writing and listening skills will be emphasized. 

   Writing classes will be held to help students practice good grammar and effective communication and organization skills.  New skills and strategies to write will be assigned to help create success.  Topics will include: Summaries, Reports, Essays, Compare/Contrast Essays, Chronolgical Narrative, Poetry Analysis, Opinion/Point of View Essays, and Stories.

     Spelling lessons will be held daily and tests will mostly occur on Fridays.

Social Studies- The focus this year will be on learning about the Western Hemisphere.  We will concentrate on learning about the development of the United States and its way of life and government from the time of the first Americans until the Civil War time.  We will spend time comparing the United States with Latin America and Canada to gain an understanding of the different land, government, culture, and way of life of the different people.

Science-We will be working out of a textbook as well as doing observations and activities in the classroom.  We will study biomes, weather, air and water, matter, sound and light, and about the circulatory and respiratory system.
